In Over The Horizon: The Age of Discovery in Florida, Michael Weech will discuss the story of exploration and discovery in the New World. Why did Europe suddenly look west in the 1490s? Why did the Age of Discovery start when it did and what was the purpose? Why was Florida so important? How many Spanish explorers met disaster in the humid wilds of Florida? And, who was already here when the first Europeans arrived? These questions and more will be answered!
The Age of Discovery was a critical time in World History Mr. Weech will discuss why it happened and who the major players were. He’ll also explain how it affected the powers in Europe and the empires and people indigenous to the New World who bore the tragic brunt in this period of history.
Michael Weech has been the Programming Coordinator at Heritage Park and Cultural Center for four years. He has a degree in history from the University of West Florida and has previously worked at the Heritage Museum of Northwest of Florida.
